Today we put the finishing touches on our catapults! The kids had a great time launching marshmallows with them.

Science Workshop
Yesterday, we had a special science workshop at lunch. The students first saw a demonstration of elephant toothpaste and we learned about exothermic reactions. Next, we created pink slime and talked about polymers. Finally, the students started a gummy bear experiment. The gummy bears are shown below.

Birch Tree Art
This art project incorporated many of the elements and principles of design that we have been learning about, but we focused mainly on tone and value. The students painted their tissue paper backgrounds onto a white piece of paper, then carefully added their birch trees. With great care, they added shadow to their paintings.
Marshmallow Catapults
As part of our Simple Machines Science Unit, we have begun marshmallow catapults! We hope to complete them on Thursday.
Island Map Project
In Social Studies, we have been learning about geographic features. The students have been working very hard on their maps, incorporating what they have learned about landforms and bodies of water. The finished products look great!

Halloween Silhouettes
Students used their understanding of contrast and emphasis to create these stunning and spooky Halloween silhouettes.
Grade 3 Science Club
For Halloween, members of the Grade 3 Science Club and I created Halloween slime! We talked about polymers and chemical reactions.
This week, we created water mazes and learned about cohesion and surface tension.
Many of the students in Mrs. Patterson's class have expressed an interest in joining the Science Club. As our students are very busy during most lunches, I am hoping to do a special lunchtime science "workshop" for the students in our class.

Wheels and Axles
We are currently doing a unit on simple and compound machines. We created balloon-powered cars when we learned about the wheel and axle.
Colour and Line
This art project was inspired by an Austrian artist, named Hundertwasser. We modeled our artwork after Hundertwasser's love of colour and lines. We talked about warm and cool colours, line, contrast, and emphasis. The students worked very hard on this project, and their efforts have not gone unnoticed! Many teachers and parents have stopped by our classroom to compliment the students' work.
Watercolour Resist Fish
For this art project, we used oil pastels to create a resist for our watercolour paintings. We revisited warm and cool colours, and talked about emphasis and contrast. The fish turned out beautifully!
